As I mentioned earlier, viewing the procession is a complete experience and photos alone doesn’t justify the scale or grandness of the extravaganza – keeping this in mind I present some of the most colourful and memorable moments from the procession. And from my limited knowledge I have tried identifying the various performing groups. Feel free to correct and add comments.
Tiger Dance
The two big walking dolls are symbolic of the Dasara procession and I have not seen a procession without them!
A Tibetan flute troupe holding the sign board – “Thank you India, 50 yrs Tibetans in Exile”. Btw, Karnataka has the second highest Tibetan population in India, only next to Himachal Pradesh!
Human wheel in motion!
B.G.S. Veeragase Nrityatand – Sri Adichunchanagiri Mahasansthan Mutt, Mandya
Just imagine the effort required to drum along like this for another 5 kms!!
The Black (and jolly) Men
Lambadi Women
Every section of society participates in the procession, that’s the beauty of it.
… and finally the 46 yr old Elephant Balarama carrying for the fourth consecutive year the statue of Goddess Chamundeshwari in the golden howdah, weighing all of 800 kg!
Here, we can see that Balarama is flanked by two female Elephants, Sarala and Mary.
With the passing of Balarama carrying the sacred statue of Goddess Chamundi, the procession ends. I waited for the exodus of people to pass, meanwhile noticed a curious thing – few people were smearing their feet with Elephant dung lying around, reporting this to my mom revealed that this is supposed to be auspicious. No wonder!
